Hi Neighbor!

I’m Laurel, mom to a preschooler and a first grader, a WPPA and VillageFest committee volunteer, an Early Childhood Education parent coordinator, the wife of a St. Anthony Firefighter, a senior leader at a communications agency and a St. Anthony New Brighton teachers’ union-endorsed candidate for school board.

Education is in my blood. My father retired after teaching English literature, history and civics, my mom retired from teaching ECFE, and my grandmother was a school librarian. I was a preschool aide, youth group advisor and camp counselor. In high school, while attending Duluth East, I was the chair of the Duluth Youth Advisory Board (DYAB), a mayoral committee of students from across the (then) four main Duluth high schools. I attended city council and school board meetings as a representative of the youth. When referendums came up, DYAB members worked together, at times standing in the rain at intersections across town, to show the residents why this was important for all schools. It was my first taste of local government, and I hoped it wouldn’t be my last.

Now, I have the opportunity to continue that work I started so long ago.

I want our schools to continue to be a place where we see the best in our students. I want our schools to continue to be a model for other districts. I want our schools to continue to support and meet the needs of our teachers and staff. And, because I’m not a teacher myself, I believe that the school board is the best place for me to help ensure that is the reality of our district.

Please explore my site to better understand my commitments to our community, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions. Thank you!
